Shire CEO’s advocacy to VicRoads sees over $660k in State road funding allocated

There are 1587 kilometres of road, spanning 678 public and 63 non-public roads, in Murrindindi Shire. 1,217 km of road in the Shire are maintained by Murrindindi Shire Council, while the remaining 370 km are VicRoads (State Government) owned and managed.

Councillor Eric Lording said the easiest way to think about it is that VicRoads generally looks after the highways which connect our towns, while Council looks after all the smaller roads in between.

“Our CEO, Craig Lloyd, has been working hard with Ministers, local representatives and VicRoads to make sure the condition and safety of roads in our Shire are a priority,” Cr Lording said.

“So we’re really pleased to see VicRoads carrying out some of the major improvement activities we have advocated for on behalf of communities in Murrindindi Shire.

“Notably, there are $660,000 worth of road safety improvements happening on the Goulburn Valley Highway between Koriella and Cathkin. This project will see the installation of safety barriers to protect drivers from exiting the road and impacting trees as well as the sealing of 3.3 kilometres of dangerous gravel shoulders.

“Likewise, there’s currently works underway in Castella, where the Melba Highway is being resurfaced in the section just north of Healesville-Kinglake Road. This section has been in poor condition for some time.

“Other recent VicRoads activities have included the line marking and signage works at the Grant and Downey Street intersection in Alexandra, which Council advocated for at a community information session.

“We also think it is really important to ensure that our communities get to have a say in any changes to our roads. It is critical that everyone is kept informed of works on our roads, so they know if there is a chance their journey might be delayed.

“The community should let us know if they have particular concerns about a road – click here to submit a customer request. Or you can give us a call on 5772 0333”, Cr Lording added.
