Tip top time naming Shire “Scrap Shacks”

Murrindindi Shire received over 100 suggested names from 51 people in pursuit of naming council’s new tip-based re-use shops with an eager Eildon resident forwarding 17 suggestions.

The reuse shops open Tuesday, April 24 at both the Yea and Alexandra Resource Recovery Centres for a 12 to 18 month trial period.

Council asks for community patience as the trial progresses.

The competition to come up names for facilities was held from February 12 to March 15, with shire residents invited to submit their ideas with the promise of glory and a prize of $100 to spend on council services.

Among 20 names shortlisted, ‘Good Pickings’, ‘Rediscovered’ and ‘Salvage Shed’ were favourites. Suggestions were made by multiple people, with the theme “Waste Not, Want Not” appearing nine times in various guises.

After debate between councillors, the name ‘Scrap Shack’ was declared winner.

Councillor for Infrastructure and Waste, Eric Lording,  stated everybody was looking forward to opening the Scrap Shack Alexandra and the Scrap Shack Yea.

“The Scrap Shacks provide a wonderful opportunity for residents to not only find treasures, but also start thinking about using consumables more sustainably and creatively,” Cr Lording said.

Who made the winning suggestion?

Wait and see until the next Council meeting on Tuesday, April 24 at  For more details about the meeting, call Council on (03) 5772 0333 or check out Council’s website.
