$878,150 upgrade Broad Gully Rd, Hurstbridge

Nillumbik Shire will commence works to Broad Gully Road, Hurstbridge in early December.

Council successfully applied for Federal Government funding of $878,150 for a suite of safety measures for the winding, country road on which there have been 12 crashes resulting in one death, two serious injuries and nine other injuries over five years from 2011-2016.

Mayor Peter Clarke is grateful Council would be able to start implementing the safety measures before the end of the year.

“There has been another death on the road this year, since Council put in the funding application. This dangerous road needs to be made safer,” Clarke said.

“Easter is so often a particularly bad time on the roads – it’s good to know the road will be safer by then.”

Safety measures include line markings, shoulder sealing and cutting the embankment.

Council has already applied for and succeeding in reducing the speed limit from 80 km/h down to 60 km/h.

The Federal Government funding will cover the works program developed by Nillumbik Shire.  Works are due to be completed by March 2019.
