‘Give it a Try’ afternoon at Eltham Leisure Centre

People with disAbility and limited mobility are invited to a free Give it a Try afternoon to experience all the Eltham Leisure Centre has to offer on Friday, 16 November from 1pm to 3pm.

The facility and its new $20.2 million Aquatic Centre redevelopment offers state-of-the-art features designed to be accessible to all, and includes a Changing Places facility for people with severe disAbility.

Nillumbik Shire’s Inclusion Committee chair, Councillor Jane Ashton said a Council grant to Aligned Leisure, which manages the centre on behalf of Council, made the initiative possible.

“We welcome all people with disAbility, their families and carers to come along and join the fun. We hope it encourages people to be more active,” Ashton said.

The Give it a Try event, from 1pm-3pm on Friday 16 November at the Eltham Leisure Centre (40 Brougham Street, Eltham) commences with refreshments for participants, carers and support workers in the program room.

There are a number of activities to try:

  • Aqua-Zumba in the pool
  • Easy, fun 15 minute- exercise classes in the gym
  • Tours of the facility with staff highlighting all the accessible features
  • Give-aways

There are ramps leading into the warm pool, main pool, and eight-lane pool as well as the heated therapeutic pool.

There is also access to the jet pool just off the main pool. An aquatic wheelchair and a hoist are available.

There are even holders at all the pools where walking sticks can be stored. Both the sauna and steam rooms are wheelchair accessible.

Visitors are also encouraged to view the art exhibition on display at the centre and fill in feedback forms on how Nillumbik Shire Council can make Nillumbik even more inclusive.

The exhibition, Better Together, has been produced by artists from Araluen and St John of God Accord, and has been travelling around the Shire as part of Council’s consultation for the next Disability Action Plan.
