DOREEN, VIC. — Andrew Cassar, an education support worker at Marymede Catholic College in Doreen, has had his bail tightened after pleading guilty to a string of child sex offences, including sexual penetration of a child under the age of 16.
The Catholic school pedophile had his bail tightened as he faces a likely prison term in isolation (‘the boneyard’) over disturbing child sex offences.
Andrew Cassar, 24, faced the County Court on Monday, where he pleaded guilty to six offences including sexual penetration of a child under the age of 16, sexual grooming and knowingly possessing child abuse material.
The charges are rolled up to include 23 separate incidents which took place in Doreen and other northern suburban locations.
The convicted pedophile was employed as an education support worker at Marymede Catholic College in Doreen when the offending occurred.
During his arraignment, Mr Cassar admitted he began sexually penetrating his child victim from November 10, 2025 until March 9, 2026.
In March, police arrested him on school grounds.
He also admitted that he groomed the girl for almost a month before the first act of sexual penetration.
That offence carries a maximum of 15 years’ imprisonment.
Mr Cassar had his bail significantly tightened after queries were raised by Judge Gerard Mullaly.
He noted that under his current bail conditions, Mr Cassar is free to flee the country.
“He does not have a requirement that he not leave Australia, that is, he’s not by bail prevented from leaving Australia,” Judge Mullaly noted.
A bail condition was made preventing him from leaving the country.
Mr Cassar was also previously able to move homes provided he gives police 24 hours’ notice on a change of address.
Judge Mullaly said this was insufficient and ordered the pedophile to remain at a fixed living address.
“The one thing we need to know, the court, is where is he so that if he doesn’t turn up, something can be done.”
Mr Cassar held a valid Working with Children’s check when employed by the school.
He will return to court in February 2027 for sentencing.
