Homicide Squad detectives today charged two Victoria Police officers with negligent manslaughter following the death of a man in Hoppers Crossing last year.
The two police officers – a 29-year-old male constable and a 45-year-old male sergeant, both from the North West Metro Region – have been suspended from Victoria Police since July last year.
Unlike civilians charged with criminal offences, the charged police officers have not been named.
“Since the incident occurred last year, it has been subject to investigation by the Homicide Squad with oversight from Professional Standards Command,” Deputy Commissioner Wendy Steendam, Public Safety and Security said.
Both officers have been bailed and will appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court tomorrow, Friday, September 12.
The charges relate to the death of a 35-year-old Hoppers Crossing man, who was arrested at the corner of Heaths and Tarneit Roads, Hoppers Crossing on July 15, 2024, and subsequently died in hospital eight days later on July 23.
“Our thoughts today are also with the Briggs family and we will ensure they continue to have a range of support services in place as the matter progresses.
“The overwhelming majority of our police do the right thing day in and day out and provide exemplary service to the community. Today’s update should not take away from their efforts more broadly,” Deputy Commissioner Steendam said.
