Coldstream and Yarra Junction’s multipurpose sporting court projects are complete.
Yarra Ranges councillor Fiona McAllister and Federal Member for Casey, Tony Smith, will open the Coldstream courts at a community opening at Halley Supple Reserve, Coldstream 5.30pm on Wednesday, July 18.
The main court at Coldstream, landscaping and car parking works were recently completed after the courts and LED lighting were opened. Four clay tennis courts were converted to one netball court and one multipurpose court for tennis and netball with new lighting.
The new concrete with acrylic coating courts replaced the red porous material tennis courts. The new works at Coldstream include:
• Two netball courts
• Two tennis courts (with the ability to add another two courts)
• LED lighting to meet Tennis and Netball Australian Standards
• New fencing
• Minor landscaping including new paths and hardstand viewing area
• Car park upgrade
• Drainage improvements
The Coldstream Tennis Club was vacated three years ago due to a lack of members and use of the courts by the local social club was limited.
Coldstream Football Netball Club and Coldstream Netball Club member Narelle Collette has played netball for 30 years.
“I started playing at seven and now my daughter plays in the open age group,” Ms Collette said.
“She started at age seven too and like me has made lifelong friends though the clubs.
“People will see us training at the new courts and we hope they might want to watch and contact us to join and get involved.”
Council provided $354,455 to the Coldstream and Yarra Junction projects. The Federal Government provided $140,000 to the Coldstream project through the Community Development Grant and $18,000 to the Yarra Junction project through the Stronger Communities Program.
Yarra Junction’s multipurpose court was refurbished to improve the playing surface for netball and tennis players, with additional landscaping works recently carried out.
The new concrete with acrylic coating courts replaced the old asphalt netball/tennis courts. The works include:
• One netball court
• Two tennis courts
• New fencing
• Minor landscaping including new paths and hardstand viewing area
• Drainage improvements
