Police focus on firearms storage

Victoria Police remind firearm licence holders that the safe storage and carriage of firearms is a fundamental requirement of firearms regulation in Victoria.

Police regularly carry out inspections to improve community safety by ensuring that firearms are being stored in a compliant manner.

Regional Firearms Officer Leading Senior Constable Laurie Armstrong said police know that most people do the right thing.

“We know that the vast majority of firearm licence holders are responsible and understand the serious responsibility which comes with firearm ownership,” said LSC Armstrong.

“However it’s important that all firearm owners remain vigilant.

“We are reminding firearm licence holders to ensure their firearms storage arrangements are compliant with their obligations under the Firearms Act.”

“It’s important that you never leave items unsecured at properties or in vehicles, even for a short period of time.

“We have had instances where firearms have been left in full sight on the back seats of vehicles and thieves have opportunistically stolen them.

Anyone caught breaching the conditions of their licences or failing in their obligations can expect to have their authority cancelled and to be charged or issued with penalty notices.

“We make no apologies for the meticulous work undertaken by police to ensure every person granted firearm or weapon authority licences is suitable to hold the authority,” said LSC Armstrong.
