Greensborough Highway Patrol officers are investigating the circumstances surrounding a fatal crash in Kinglake yesterday afternoon.
It is understood a blue Mercedes Benz sedan left the roadway and crashed into a tree on Heidelberg-Kinglake Road just after 1pm.
Emergency services worked on the driver, a 50-year-old Heidelberg Heights man. He could not be revived.
Several people called ABC Radio Melbourne (3LO) this morning during Raf Epstein’s show discussing trucks and heavy vehicles failing to use the heavy vehicle diversion due to roadworks on the Melba Highway.
VicNews is aware of several reports of near-misses as large vehicles use Google Maps and ignore the ‘Large vehicles advised to seek alternate route’ sign at the beginning of the ‘windy road’ from St Andrews to Kinglake.
It is understood – but not confirmed – that this fatality may be a direct result of heavy vehicles failing to use the proper diversion via Healesville-Kinglake Road or Whittlesea-Yea Road.
Anyone who witnessed the crash or with dashcam footage is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
