GORDON, VIC. — Ballarat Highway Patrol officers have impounded a car in Gordon on Saturday evening as part of Operation Furlong.

Officers clocked the car travelling at an alleged speed of 171km/h in a 110km/h zone on the Western Highway about 8.50pm.

The Toyota 86 was impounded for 30 days for $1405.
The 29-year-old driver had his licence suspended for 12 months and will be summoned to appear in court on several charges, including speeding dangerously and careless driving.

The man told police he just wanted to show off the car to his father, who was a passenger.

Operation Furlong is a statewide road policing operation taking place over the Melbourne Cup long weekend.

Motorists can expect to see police highly visible and enforcing across the state’s roads in an effort to reduce road trauma.

There is a significant focus on major roads heading to areas in regional Victoria, with police on the lookout for speeding and distraction offences.

Motorists should expect to be tested anywhere, any time for alcohol and drugs, with significant penalties in place for those caught driving while impaired.

Operation Furlong commences at 12:01am on Friday, October 31, and concludes at 11:59pm on Tuesday, November 4.
