Liberals promise $300k to Alexandra Footy Club

In the lead up to the 2018 state election on November 24, pork barrelling by both major parties continues with sitting member for Eildon, Cindy McLeish this week announcing $300,000 to help Alexandra Football Netball Club redevelop the Alexandra Showgrounds and Recreation Reserve.

The funding provides for construction of a multi-purpose community facility including social and meeting room facilities, kitchen, change rooms and toilets.

“These new facilities will create a state of the art environment for grassroots sport to ensure local sporting clubs can keep up with population growth,” McLeish said.

Shadow Minister for Sport, Danny O’Brien said “Cindy McLeish is fighting hard to make sure her local clubs have the facilities they need so they can continue to play sport and engage with the community.”

The redevelopment will also include construction of appropriate car parking and upgrades to storm water drainage.

“Unlike Daniel Andrews who has decided to give a massive $225 million of taxpayers’ money to the AFL to upgrade Etihad Stadium, the Liberal Nationals are getting behind local sporting clubs who desperately need our support,” McLeish said.

Community groups including the football, netball and cricket clubs as well as the Alexandra Show Society could benefit from the new facility.

The new building has further potential to be used in emergency situations as part of a staging ground for fire services as was the case in the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires.

Plans for the redevelopment are well progressed with further funding being sought from the community, local and federal government.

“This proud club has great plans for modernisation and the commitment will go a long way in assisting the Rebels to turn their dreams into reality,” McLeish said.
