KINGLAKE.
Award winning athlete Dane Waites yesterday (September 13) passed through Kinglake on his way to Pambula, NSW having left Perth on June 18 for ‘Dane’s Dream.’
Waites, who suffers autism, is running from Perth to Pambula to raise awareness and funds for Autism Spectrum Australia, Autism CRC and Beyond Blue.
Averaging 40 to 55 kilometres a day Waites will be stopping at nearby towns and has raised over $90,000 so far.
Waites comes from Pambula on the New South Wales south coast and is well known by his local community.
His heroes are Olympic medal winner Ron Clarke, Ultramarathon runners Pat Farmer,
Cliff Young and Tom Hanks in ‘Forrest Gump’.
For the past 14 years he’s run up to 50 kilometres a day as he prepares to undertake the biggest challenge of his life running over 4,000 kilometres from Perth to Pambula.
Waites seeks your support to help his dreams come true.
Since being diagnosed with classic autism Waites has learnt to talk, recognise emotions and make lifelong friendships.
He has competed in the Special Olympics in Dublin, bringing home a bronze medal for Australia.
Over 115,000 Australians suffer from autism and Waites is determined to raise the much-needed funds for medical research, awareness and support services for other Australian’s on the autism spectrum.
Waites left Kinglake this morning for Healesville and following a rest day Friday continues to Powelltown on Saturday. (Route Map)
