A 92-year-old woman was lucky to escape injury after her car ran into the Yarra River down a steep embankment in Toorak about 7.05pm.

Emergency services were called following reports the Mercedes E200 clipped a car on Alexandra Avenue and ran off the road.

Officers were shocked when they found the elderly driver was able to make her way up the incline, after her sedan was found wedged on the banks of the Yarra tilted in water.

Police have praised the Melbourne woman, and a passer-by who assisted, as she was able to open the door, make her way out of the knee-deep water and climb up the embankment.

The woman has been taken to hospital for observation and treatment for what is believed to be minor injuries.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.

It is expected the driver will undergo a licence review.
