Charges upgraded following Sunshine fatal assault

SUNSHINE, VIC. — Detectives from the Homicide Squad have this afternoon charged a 15-year-old boy with manslaughter following a fatal assault on a Sunshine shop owner on Saturday.

A 60-year-old man sustained critical injuries when several youths allegedly set upon him after they attempted to steal items from a nearby store on Hampshire Road on 1 August just after 2pm.

The victim, who was working nearby, is alleged to have come to the aid of a nearby shop employee who was involved in a scuffle in the street over the allegedly stolen items.

The man was transported to hospital, where he sadly died yesterday afternoon.

Three boys aged 12, 13 and 15 years old from the Brimbank area, a 14-year-old girl from the Banyule area and a 14-year-old girl from the Brimbank area were each charged by Melton Crime Investigation Unit with affray, violent disorder, intentionally cause serious injury and intentionally cause injury.

A 15-year-old boy from the Brimbank area has today had his charges upgraded to include manslaughter.

Charges against the 13-year-old boy were withdrawn.

All four will appear at a children’s court at a later date.
