Homicide Squad detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a man in a suspicious St Kilda house fire last night.

Firefighters were called to reports of a Chapel Street, St Kilda house fire about 8:40pm.

A police spokesperson said the property was a double-storey building with a legal firm on the ground floor and a residential home above. It is located near the St Kilda police station.

Responding firefighters located a critically injured man, who is yet to be formally identified, inside the property.

He was treated but died at the scene.

The exact circumstances surrounding the death, as well as the fire, are yet to be determined.

Police are treating the fire and death as suspicious.

A crime scene has been established.

An arson chemist will assess the scene. Forensics officers are currently on the scene.
