Police today charged a 32-year-old man following a pursuit in an allegedly stolen vehicle in Melton after officers spotted a grey Toyota in Melton about 4:20am.
The vehicle, with allegedly false registration plates, was sighted on Mavi Avenue, Melton by police who found an unresponsive man slumped over the steering wheel.
Police then used tyre deflation devices and attempted to arrest the driver and deployed OC (capsicum) spray, but the Toyota sped off on its rims.
The vehicle was then followed.
Police ended the pursuit for the safety of other road users after the Toyota allegedly entered the Western Freeway on the wrong side at the Melton Ferris Road intersection and drove towards incoming traffic.
Officers once again pursued the vehicle as it reached the Werribee exit at Hopkins Road.
Police managed to box the Toyota in on the freeway between Hopkins Road and Caroline Springs Boulevard, bringing it to a stop.
The male driver, who allegedly did not comply with police, was pulled out of the vehicle and arrested at the scene.
The Toyota was allegedly stolen from Brunswick Street, Fitzroy North on Thursday, March 6.
The 32-year-old man of no fixed address was charged with several offences including theft of motor vehicle, handling stolen goods, failure to stop on police direction and reckless conduct endangering life among other charges.
He was remanded in custody to appear before the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court today.
