Buxton Primary School students celebrated the achievements and contributions of people with an [dis] ability as part of International Day of People with a Disability Day (IDPwD) and hosted a special day of activities at the school.
Murrindindi Shire CEO and Chair of the Access and Inclusion Committee, Margaret Abbey said IDPwD was developed to increase public awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with an [dis] ability.
“This special day gave Buxton’s students and teachers the opportunity to experience some of the challenges people with a disability face every day,” Ms Abbey said.
“Buxton’s students and teachers all participated in the activities.
“The activities were modelled on what life might be like with a mobility issue, or with vision, speech or hearing impairments.
“Activities included wheelchair basketball, navigating an obstacle course with special vision-impairing glasses and later a silent afternoon tea using only Auslan (sign language) to communicate before a game of charades.
“The school also heard from Wendy Kelly a Rural Access Worker from Nexus Health and Lincoln Budge, who spoke of their many achievements as well as some of the challenges they face living with a disability,” Abbey said.
This event was an initiative of Murrindindi Shire Council’s Access and Inclusion Committee and run in conjunction with Nexus Primary Health and Buxton Primary School.
