MORNINGTON, VIC. — Mornington Peninsula Shire Council has reaffirmed its commitment to a safer community, allocating a one-off investment of $500,000 to upgrade the Shire’s CCTV camera system.

A key new feature of the upgrade will be access to footage from cloud-based platforms, enabling police to view footage from multiple devices while on patrol, according to Mayor Anthony Marsh.

“This investment will ensure the Shire’s CCTV network is fully operational and able to support Victoria Police in their work.

“While community safety and crime prevention remain the responsibility of the State Government and Victoria Police, Council can play a practical role by maintaining infrastructure that assists police in protecting our community,” Marsh said.

The Shire currently maintains 60 CCTV cameras across six localities, each feeding footage directly to the nearest Victoria Police station:

  • Hastings – 12 cameras
  • Mornington – 25 cameras
  • Mount Eliza – 5 cameras
  • Mount Martha – 4 cameras
  • Rosebud – 1 camera
  • Rye – 13 cameras

At last week’s Mornington Shire Council’s meeting, councillors voted to invest the $500,000 allocated in the 2025-26 Budget for ‘community safety and crime prevention’ in repairing and upgrading the Shire’s CCTV system.

The Mornington Shire Council will now engage a security contractor to complete the upgrade, which is expected to be completed within the next three months.
