Detectives from Whittlesea Crime Investigation Unit have charged two youths following a teenage gang brawl in Preston on Sunday afternoon.

Police were called to the Northland Shopping Centre on Murray Road just after 2.30pm following reports of up to 10 people fighting.

On arrival, police located a 20-year-old man with serious injuries.

He was treated by paramedics on scene and transported to Royal Melbourne Hospital, with “upper body injuries” where he remains in a stable condition.

A 16-year-old boy from the Darebin area and a 15-year-old boy from the Melton area were arrested at the scene.

The pair have been charged overnight with affray, intentionally causing serious injury, possession of a controlled weapon and use of a controlled weapon.

The males have been remanded in custody to appear at a children’s court later.

Two other males, one with injuries, have since self-presented to hospital.

Police will conduct reassurance patrols at the shopping centre over coming days.

In a statement, Premier Jacinta Allan condemned the “appalling” attack.

“I want to thank Victoria Police, our first responders and the shop owners, staff and the public who were all incredibly brave responding to this incident,” she said.

The Victorian government is making moves to outlaw machetes by September. Opposition Leader Brad Battin said the ban should be “immediate”.

The investigation remains ongoing. At this stage, it is believed those involved are known to each other.

Additionally, investigators are keen to speak with anyone in the area at the time and anyone who may have witnessed the altercation.
