Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit detectives are appealing for public assistance following a fire in Warburton earlier this month.

Emergency services were called to the initial blaze along the Warburton Rail Trail at the base of Mount Little Joe about 6.20pm on Sunday, April 13.

Investigators understand the fire, which is being treated as suspicious, started on the southern side of the trail before travelling up the side of Mount Little Joe.

Luckily, the fire was contained before it spread to nearby houses.

Officers have been told a man was seen in the area as the fire started and was seen fleeing the area on foot just before emergency services arrived.

Investigators are also keen to speak to a group of people in the area who may have witnessed the fire being lit and anyone who might have footage of the fire.
