Detectives from the Sexual Crimes Squad have charged former St Kilda Little League football coach and primary school teacher Darrell Ray, 82, with 26 charges of indecent assault upon a male following a lengthy investigation.

The investigation relates to reported sexual assaults linked to Darrell Ray at Beaumaris Primary School dating back to the 1960s and 1970s.

Mr Ray coached the St Kilda Little League team between 1967 and 1977 and was a teacher at Beaumaris Primary School between 1971 to 1976. He also taught at Moorabbin Primary School and was a teacher-librarian at other Victorian government schools.

“Mr Ray was coach of the St Kilda Little League team for 11 seasons between 1967 and 1977 and also coached numerous school sports teams and the Moorabbin Youth Club Cats Under-11 team in the St Kilda Football Club Junior League.
“To qualify for Little League finals, league clubs had to field at least 100 boys every season, and in Mr Ray’s time St Kilda sometimes fielded up to 150, meaning he probably coached more than 1,000 boys at St Kilda and hundreds more at other clubs,” ABC journalist Russell Jackson reported for ABC News.

The charges were served on Mr Ray yesterday and he is expected to face Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on July 7, 2023.

Victoria Police encourages all victims of sexual assault and child abuse, and anyone who has knowledge of such a crime, to make a report and is “committed to investigating and bringing to justice those people who prey on children no matter how many years have passed,” Victoria Police said in a statement.
