BRUNSWICK, VIC. — Arson and Explosives Squad detectives have charged two men as part of their investigation into a theft and arson on an ATM at Queen Victoria Market last month.

A 40-year-old Brunswick man was charged on Friday, May 29, with theft, use of an explosive and conduct endangering life.

He was remanded to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on 24 August.

A 40-year-old Brunswick West man was arrested this morning. The man attempted to flee and was subsequently tased and taken into custody.

He has since been charged with over 20 charges, including:

    • cause an explosion likely to cause serious injury to property;
    • reckless conduct endangering life;
    • drive in a manner that is dangerous;
    • theft of a motor vehicle;
    • evade police;

The man appeared before the Bail and Remand Court this evening and was remanded in custody to appear before Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on August 24.

The charges follow an incident where three people allegedly caused an explosion to gain access to an ATM on Victoria Street about 2.45am on May 13.

The homemade device ignited in the face of one of the men, leaving him with serious and life-changing injuries.

Police will allege that approximately $5000 was stolen from the ATM.

It is believed the trio fled the scene on foot before the injured man was located a short time later on Peel Street.

He was conveyed to the hospital to be treated for serious facial injuries.

The investigation remains ongoing.

The incident is not linked to Operation Eclipse.
