Murrindindi adopt Open Space Strategy

At its monthly meeting on Wednesday 24 April, Murrindindi Shire Council adopted the Recreation and Open Space Strategy.

Council’s Youth, Recreation and Community Planning Portfolio Councillor Charlie Bisset said the Strategy will help Council plan and manage recreation and open space assets, including facilities and services, across the Shire for the next 10 years.

“Managing recreational facilities with, and on behalf of, the community is a key Council service with 34 public playgrounds, 16 reserves (including ovals), four outdoor pools and many tracks and trails in Murrindindi Shire,” Cr Bisset said.

The strategy aims to deliver on the following objectives:

  • Increase participation in sport and physical activity in Murrindindi Shire;
  • Enhance the inclusiveness of participation opportunities across Murrindindi Shire, regardless of age, gender or ability;
  • Support partnerships to deliver sustainable asset management and participation outcomes;
  • Support the provision of facilities that meet the changing needs of residents, including the ageing profile of the community;
  • Promote the benefits of sport, recreation and physical activity participation;
  • Support an appropriate range of places, settings and built facilities which encourage participation in formal and informal recreation in Murrindindi Shire;
  • Respond as best we can to changing community needs; and
  • Advocate and work in partnership with government agencies to attract funding and resources for facilities that meet the needs of residents and visitors to Murrindindi Shire.

“Formal and informal sport, recreation and open spaces contribute to a healthy and vibrant community by supporting social connection, providing a sense of belonging and identity and offering opportunities for everyone to be active.

“As part of the Strategy development, Council held four public information sessions and community members also had the opportunity to submit feedback via an online survey.

“I would like to take this opportunity to say thanks to the groups and individuals that got involved in this process, your input was greatly valued and helped shape the strategy outcomes,” Cr Bisset concluded.
