Murrindindi seeking assistance for improved mental health services in the Shire

You might have seen Murrindindi Shire’s open letter calling on politicians and candidates to make an urgent commitment to provide more resources to mental health services in Murrindindi Shire.

Murrindindi Shire Council Mayor Charlie Bisset said our service providers are doing the best they can but they aren’t getting enough funding from the State and Federal Governments to provide the services our community members need, when they need them or where they need them.

“Now is the time to stand up and say our “mental health matters”,” Bisset said.

“According to SANE, at least 45 percent of us will experience a mental illness during our lives, and at least 20 percent of adults are affected by mental illness every year. So, while you might not need mental health services now, you might someday and you definitely know someone who has, does or will.  We want to make sure Murrindindi Shire is not left behind when it comes to accessing mental health services.

“Council continues to hear from our community about significant issues in the provision of appropriate mental health services and support in Murrindindi Shire. The few services that are provided by the State Government to our community are not easily accessible and are not able to meet the growing demand. Our communities are also frustrated by the bureaucratic geographic boundaries which further limit their access to mental health and other health services.

“So, to individuals, community groups, businesses and organisations: this is a call to action. Please help us show the government how many people in Murrindindi Shire understand the importance of this issue and demand action.

“You can help by taking a photo of yourself, your friends and family or any group you’re a part of with a ‘mental health matters’ sign – check out Council’s Facebook page for ideas – and share your photo on our Facebook page.

“If you don’t feel comfortable doing that, please share our Facebook post on your own page. While you are at it, you can jump onto Council’s website and download a copy of our letter/email template which you can send to candidates in the State election and other politicians at the State and Federal level.

Great if you can let us know you have done this, by dropping us a quick email at msc@murrindindi.vic.gov.au.

“This is a case where every voice counts, so please get involved with this important campaign – because our ‘Mental Health Matters’” Bisset said.
