Nillumbik Shire offers sensory-friendly holiday fun at Edendale Farm

Children with autism and sensory processing issues can explore Edendale Community Environment Farm at a sensory-friendly tour on Thursday 26 September.

Led by a farmer, the 45-minute tour will allow children and young people to learn about the farm and take part in activities like feeding the chickens. The tour is sponsored by Eltham Paediatrics, a local medical practice with roots in the community.

Mayor Karen Egan said the tour would be welcoming and informative but aimed especially towards those with autism and sensory issues.

“Creating an engaged and connected community is a priority for Council, and this means crafting opportunities for children as well as adults,” Cr Egan said.

“The tour is a wonderful chance for children to enjoy Edendale in a supported and sensory-friendly way,” she said.

Councillor John Dumaresq, who represents Edendale ward, encouraged families with children who require a sensory-friendly setting to register for the tour.

“Edendale Community Environment Farm is one of the community’s favourite landmarks, and it’s great for children to be able to learn about animals and the environment in a tailored and caring way,” Cr Dumaresq said.

Dr Christopher Ward from Eltham Paediatrics said the tour would employ a range of strategies to support children and young people with autism and sensory issues, such as smaller group sizes, a flexible approach and reduced stimulation.

“Eltham Paediatrics is delighted to be able to support young people in our local community this way,” Dr Ward said.

The tour will begin at 2.30pm on 26 September. The cost is $8 for young people going on the tour. Parents and carers can attend for free. Booking is essential.

There will be further tours during the January and April 2020 school holidays.
