Murrindindi Shire Council is calling for names for its first recycling and reuse shops at the Yea and Alexandra transfer stations and while it’s unlikely the names “Tippy McTipface” and Wastey McWasteface” will get a guernsey, Council is confident the community will come up with some great ideas.
Council’s Infrastructure and Waste Portfolio Councillor Eric Lording said the shops will open for business as a trial next month and Council wants the community to get behind this competition.
“If it was up to our Resource Recovery Officer Roger Scorah, it would be called “Roger’s Recycling”, but while we love Roger, we think we can do better,” Cr Lording said.
“The Yea shop and the Alexandra shop – which are aptly built from re-purposed shipping containers – will provide residents with the opportunity to buy recycled items salvaged from the Resource Recovery Centres cheaply.
“We’ll be separating items for sale from the other waste people drop off. This is to remove the injury risks for our customers so they can have a look without being overwhelmed by the clutter out on the pile and consider what they might like to re-use,” Cr Lording said
“Re-purposing items not only reduces our landfill, but also ensures we are thinking of better ways to use our waste – by turning it into something useful.
“We’re seeing some fabulous re-purposing ideas through social media, with old doors being made into tables (for inside and in the garden), windows being turned into greenhouses, car parts being made into furniture, old wheel rims being converted to hose reels and even old petrol canisters being made into bathroom cabinets. The only limit is your own imagination.
“We are running these shops as trial projects and if successful, we will consider establishing them more permanently and will also explore the need for other sites. I urge everyone to get behind this great initiative so it can spread right across the Shire.”
“This competition is designed to find great names for the new shops, but is also to raise awareness of the fact they’ll be open for business,” added Cr Lording.
“The two winners will receive a voucher for any Council service to the value of $100 and of course, the winner’s glory of the name being used!”
