10.30pm UPDATE: A Severe Weather Warning for damaging winds issued by the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) continues for people in Central, East Gippsland, South West, North Central, North East, West and South Gippsland and parts of Wimmera Forecast Districts.
A cold front is expected to cross the State Tuesday night and early Wednesday. Strong and squally westerly winds are expected to turn southwesterly following the passage of the front.
DAMAGING WINDS, averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts of 90 to 100 km/h are expected along with parts of the coast and Alpine areas (above 1200 metres) during the remainder of Tuesday. Peak wind gusts up to 110 km/h over the Alpine area.
DAMAGING WINDS, averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts of 90 to 100 km/h are expected across southern and mountain areas from early morning Wednesday. Wind gusts may reach 110 km/h over the Alpine area.
Local thunderstorms or heavy showers with peak gusts of 90 to 100 km/h are Wednesday in the warning area.
Blizzard conditions are likely over Alpine areas.
Southwesterly winds will moderate from the west during Wednesday afternoon.
Locations which may be affected include most of Victoria on – and south of -the Great Dividing Range including Kinglake, Whittlesea, Wallan, Seymour, Mernda, South Morang, Warrnambool, Ballarat, Geelong, Melbourne, Traralgon and Bairnsdale.
Strongest wind gusts recorded to 10.30pm Tuesday include:
- 124 km/h at Wilsons Promontory at 8.57pm
- 113 km/h at Mt Buller at 6.51pm
- 107 km/h at Mt Hotham at 8.44pm
- 106 km/h at Cape Nelson 9.49pm
- 95 km/h at Cape Otway at 7.20pm
The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Move vehicles under cover or away from trees;
* Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony;
* Keep clear of fallen power lines;
The next Severe Weather Warning will be issued by 5:00 am AEST Wednesday.
