Police have charged a 38-year-old man after fires were allegedly lit at Queen Victoria Market in Melbourne overnight.
Emergency services were called to reports of four small fires at food stalls near the Peel Street end of the market about 11.10pm.
The man allegedly threatened a member of the public who attempted to put the fires out before emergency services arrived.
He was not physically injured.
None of the stores were open at the time of the incident, however several stores have been damaged by fire and water.
The 38-year-old man of no fixed address was arrested at the scene and has been charged with criminal damage by fire and unlawful assault and remanded to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court later today (Saturday 23/8).
Police are working with security at the market to notify stall owners of the damage.
