ELTHAM, VIC. — At 11.10pm last night, the Eltham CFA, with FRV support, responded after a caller to triple-zero (000) reported a garage fire at Henry Street, Eltham.

Last night, Saturday, October 4, Eltham CFA firefighters first arrived on scene within four minutes to find a garage and adjoining house on fire. They were soon joined by Eltham and Greensborough FRV firefighters.

A family of four were woken up by smoke alarms sounding and small explosions coming from the garage.

They safely self-evacuated with their pet cat.

The fire was caused by lithium-ion batteries ‘on charge’ in the garage and took approximately 90 minutes to bring under control.

The garage, including 4 cars, was destroyed whilst most of the house was extensively damaged by fire.

The family will source alternative accommodation.

FRV and CFA firefighters remain on the scene this morning to overhaul and continue to extinguish hotspots.
