The six-month Better Together travelling art exhibition opens next week and will springboard public consultation into Nillumbik Shire Council’s new Disability Action Plan.
Chair of the Inclusion Advisory Committee, Councillor Jane Ashton will officially open the exhibition featuring the work of artists with a disability at the Diamond Valley Library from 4-5pm on July 19. All are welcome.
The exhibition moves to the Hurstbridge Hub from August 6.
The work of 30 artists from Araluen and St John of God Accord will be showcased at up to six venues across the Shire between now and mid-December. These include community centres and local businesses.
As part of consultation, the community is asked to fill in feedback postcards available at the art exhibitions and at some local businesses.
This feedback will be used to shape Council’s new four-year Disability Action Plan. The name Better Together applies to not only the travelling art exhibition but also the new plan itself.
The name stems from a work of art titled Better Together by artists with disability commissioned by Council to mark International Day of People with Disability in December 2017.
Cr Ashton said the name of the artwork accurately summed up the initiative.
“We’re all better as a community when we work together,” Cr Ashton said.
