Nillumbik Shire continues moving forward with First Nations people

Nillumbik Shire invites the community to a Flag Raising Ceremony and morning tea for Reconciliation Week next Thursday 30 May on the lawn in front of the civic offices in Greensborough at 10 am.

The event is organised by the Nillumbik Reconciliation Group in partnership with council and Eltham High School.

Mayor Karen Egan will be one of the speakers, and there will be performances by Eltham High Students followed by morning tea.

Cr Egan said the theme this year, ‘Grounded in Truth, Walk Together with Courage’, was a call to all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements.

“We all need to look at how each and every one of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia,” Cr Egan said.

A special reconciliation workshop for youth leaders, led by Wurundjeri Elder Uncle Ian Hunter, has been organised for 11am12pm after the festivities.

Representatives from all schools in Nillumbik are invited to attend both the ceremony and the workshop, which will explore the meaning of reconciliation for Aboriginal people.

Community Services Chair Cr Grant Brooker said a number of archaeological sites remained as evidence of Aboriginal custodianship of much land in the Shire.

“We have implemented a range of programs aimed at raising awareness of Nillumbik’s Aboriginal past and we will continue promoting reconciliation in the community,” Cr Brooker said.

Anyone wanting to attend the ceremony or workshop is asked to RSVP at www.trybooking.com/BBVNC or by calling Nillumbik Shire Council on 9433 3345.

National Reconciliation Week runs from 27 May to 3 June.
