Nillumbik Shire will be holding North East Link community information sessions at the Hurstbridge Community Hub on Friday, August 25 from 1pm and the St Andrews Community Centre (Wadambuk) on Saturday, August 26 from 1.30pm.
The missing section of the metropolitan ring road was first proposed in the late 1980s and first published in the 1988 edition of Melways.
The originally planned route was to use parts of Aqueduct Rd, St Helena and was to run adjacent to Churinga School and behind Greenhills Primary School, Greensborough. This route was since abandonded when (the then) Diamond Valley Shire sold the land for housing and retail development.
Today, St Helena Marketplace, a Woolworths-owned shopping centre at the corner of St Helena, Wallowa and Aqueduct roads stands in the way of where the orginal route was planned over twenty years ago.
Now four possible corridors -not including the originally planned route- have been determined through extensive works spanning the north east, including geo-technical investigations, traffic modelling, environment studies and discussions with community groups, businesses and local residents.
Each corridor has been assessed against a range of measures including key local concerns such as reducing congestion, getting trucks of residential roads, as well as the impact on urban areas and the environment.
Each of the options identified begin at the Ring Road in Greensborough and connect to either the Eastern Freeway or EastLink, and will involve tunnels, new surface roads and bridges.
