Dutton tells Liberal faithful “Voice could risk years of litigation”

A Liberal Party email seen by VicNews by Federal leader of the opposition, Peter Dutton says that the High Court – not Parliament – would determine the “power and remit” of a Voice to Parliament.

“According to the Liberal Party email the Government has overlooked the concerns of many legal experts. It is pursuing a Voice that covers all areas of executive government.

No one can predict with any certainty what a future High Court might decide. Enshrining this Voice into the Constitution means it’s permanent,” the email from Dutton states.

“Legal experts have warned this Voice could risk years of litigation. This Voice proposal is legally risky with unknown consequences,” Dutton said.

According to Dutton’s email, no issue – the economy, national security, infrastructure, health, education and more – would be beyond The Voice to Parliament’s scope.

Later this year, Australians will be asked to decide whether to change our Constitution and create a permanent Indigenous Voice to Parliament.

Peter Dutton’s office was contacted for comment.
